About

Gallery Macniven was founded in October 2020 by Gemma and Scott Macniven, and is a fantasy art studio specialising in fine art and narrative illustration.

Based in Scotland, we create high-quality, original artworks for collectors, licensed products, publishing, and gaming. We hope our artworks spark your imagination and fill your heart with wonder, and excitement.

While most of our work is for our own personal projects, we also pursue work in the professional environment.

Scott and Gemma are also both available for private commissions.

The Artists
Gemma Macniven

Gemma is an oil painter and graphite artist based in Scotland, and is deeply inspired by her love of gothic horror, fantasy, fairytales, and romantasy novels. This influences have guided and evolved her artwork into one of classic romanticism in a modern light. One of her biggest dreams is to create a piece that would feel at home in a Guillermo Del Toro film.

Having studied for many years in the style and craft of the American comic book market, Gemma spent almost a decade creating comics for various markets and self publishing authors. However, her desire to create beautiful oil paintings like icons Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo drew her away from pencil and ink and onto canvas and oils.

Nowadays Gemma creates hauntingly beautiful artworks that absolutely drip with atmosphere and narrative storytelling, as long as you are not too afraid to look away.

Scott Macniven

Inspired by fantasy movies, comic books, Disney, and many, many cartoons, Scott creates joyful and whimsical artwork. His narrative artworks have taken him through Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Faeries, Modern mysticism, and children's books. One of his biggest dreams is to work with Wizards of the Coast on properties like Magic the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.

Completely self taught, Scott copied classic cartoons like the Looney Tunes and TMNT before setting his sights on comic books and Magic the Gathering. Creating many illustrations and skills from copying the masters in these crafts, he then applied them to his own stories and creations. Growing and creating artworks with pencils, then inks, then watercolours, and finally oil paints.

Scott continues to improve his artwork, and when he's not walking his dog through the forest, hiking, playing with his kids, or sleeping, you will find him with a pencil, pen, or brush in his hand.
